Are you dreaming of an active, vibrant retirement in Western Washington? If the Pacific Northwest is on your radar, you’ve likely found yourself comparing a handful of scenic coastal towns.
When buyers tour the region from out of state, they almost always bring a shortlist of communities they are considering. While I am a hyper-local real estate expert right here in Gig Harbor, Washington, I want to provide an honest, high-level compare-and-contrast guide to the five most common PNW communities people evaluate alongside our maritime haven.
Whether you are looking for a bustling college town, a sunny rain-shadow sanctuary, or a secluded island lifestyle, here is how the top Western Washington retirement destinations stack up against Gig Harbor.

1. Bellingham (and the Greater Whatcom County Coast)
Includes Blaine, Birch Bay, and the Semiahmoo Resort area.
Located at the northernmost point of Western Washington, Bellingham is a fantastic waterfront city, but it offers a starkly different lifestyle than Gig Harbor.
The Vibe: Bellingham is the largest city on our list, with a population of nearly 100,000. Home to Western Washington University, it boasts a progressive, highly vibrant, and classic college-town energy. You’ll find a bustling city center packed with independent bookstores, local coffee shops, and a thriving arts scene.
The Geography: While Gig Harbor’s community activities are intentionally spread out across our peninsulas, Bellingham centers heavily around its downtown and historic Fairhaven districts. It is a port town, though it leans slightly more industrial than the quaint, historic maritime village feel of Gig Harbor.
Real Estate & Healthcare: The median home price ranges between $700,000 and $800,000—considerably less than Gig Harbor, but still a premium. It features excellent, close-in medical infrastructure, which is a massive tick in the box for retirees.
The Cons: Accessibility is the primary hurdle. The highway traffic between Seattle and Bellingham has become incredibly challenging. If you plan to travel frequently, the long, unpredictable drive to SeaTac International Airport can become problematic.
The Perks: You are right on Canada’s doorstep. World-class cities like Vancouver are just a short drive north.
2. Anacortes: The Gateway to the San Juans
Of all the towns on this list, Anacortes shares the closest DNA with Gig Harbor.
The Vibe: With a population of around 18,000, Anacortes matches Gig Harbor’s tight-knit city size almost exactly. It is a true maritime haven, completely filled with boutique shops, local eateries along its main street, and passionate recreational boaters.
The Weather Bonus: Anacortes sits partially in the PNW rain shadow, receiving only about 29 inches of rain annually (compared to Gig Harbor’s 40+ inches). If you want more sunshine without leaving the coast, this is a major perk.
Politics: Much like Gig Harbor, Anacortes is considered a "purple," politically balanced community with a welcoming mix of perspectives.
The Cons: Because it serves as the primary public ferry hub for the San Juan Islands, summer tourism is massive—far more congested than the seasonal traffic in Gig Harbor. Additionally, it lacks a major, immediate healthcare infrastructure; complex medical needs will require a lengthy drive toward Seattle. Like Bellingham, airport runs to SeaTac are a significant time commitment due to Interstate 5 traffic.
3. Whidbey Island & Camano Island
While distinct, these two unique islands are frequently lumped together by out-of-state buyers exploring Island County.
Whidbey Island
Whidbey is a vast, 70,000-resident island comprised of three highly diverse communities: Langley (a progressive town at the south end), Coupeville (a historic waterfront village), and Oak Harbor (a bustling military community).
The Real Estate Win: Whidbey offers the most affordable median home prices on our list, sitting comfortably between $500,000 and $650,000.
Healthcare: Outstanding healthcare is readily available on-island, largely anchored by the presence of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
The Compromise: The military presence means jet noise is a daily reality. Homebuyers must sign an official noise disclosure when purchasing here. Additionally, the island lacks a singular central gathering point, making it feel very spread out compared to Gig Harbor’s cohesive community.
Camano Island
Located just east of Whidbey, Camano Island is accessible via a bridge from Stanwood, meaning no ferry is required.
The Vibe: With only 18,000 residents, Camano is deeply peaceful, quiet, and rural.
The Compromise: There is virtually no commercial infrastructure on Camano Island. There are no major grocery stores, medical complexes, or commercial centers. For everyday essentials and healthcare, residents must cross the bridge into Stanwood or head elsewhere.
4. Sequim: The Rain Shadow Sanctuary
Sequim (pronounced skwim) is famous for one massive feature: weather. Nestled in the literal shadow of the Olympic Mountains, it receives the absolute most sunshine and the least rainfall in Western Washington.
The Lifestyle: Sequim is an absolute hotbed for retirees. If you are looking for established 55+ master-planned neighborhoods, quiet golf course communities, and a slow-paced lifestyle, Sequim is unmatched. The immediate town has 8,000 residents, expanding to about 25,000 in the greater surrounding rural area.
Real Estate: Like Whidby Island, Sequim is highly accessible for buyers, with median home prices ranging from $500,000 to $600,000.
The Cons: Location and isolation. Sequim is the westernmost point on this list. It is a solid 2.5-hour drive from Gig Harbor just to reach the urban corridor. There is no major healthcare infrastructure nearby outside of a small regional hospital in Port Angeles; in fact, most residents maintain specialized medical helicopter policies for major emergencies.

5. Bainbridge Island: The Elegant Suburb
If budget is no barrier and quick access to downtown Seattle is your non-negotiable priority, Bainbridge Island enters the conversation.
The Vibe: Home to 25,000 residents, Bainbridge is a highly progressive, sophisticated, and tight-knit community. It is heavily focused on green energy, eco-friendly architecture, and a thriving local arts and culinary scene centered around Winslow and Lynwood Center.
The Commute: While a bridge connects the north end to Poulsbo, the lifeblood of Bainbridge is the 35-minute car ferry directly into downtown Seattle, making it highly desirable for professionals and retirees who want city amenities at arm's reach.
Real Estate Premium: Bainbridge Island is by far the most expensive market in the region. While Gig Harbor boasts a median home price around $850,000–$860,000 (with averages closer to $1M), Bainbridge Island commands a staggering median price over $1.3 Million and an average clearing $1.6 Million.
The Infrastructure Quirks: There are zero big-box stores on Bainbridge. If you need a trip to Costco or Home Depot, you face an hour-long drive to Silverdale or a ferry ride to Seattle. Summer tourist traffic can choke the island’s primary thoroughfare seamlessly.
The Verdict: Why People Choose Gig Harbor
When you look at the entire map of Western Washington, Gig Harbor consistently wins out for retirees because it strikes the ultimate balance.
We offer the historic, tight-knit maritime charm of Anacortes and Bainbridge, but with an unbeatable location. We aren't isolated on an island, dependent on ferry schedules, or cut off from medical care. Gig Harbor features robust, top-tier healthcare infrastructure right in our backyard, immediate access to everyday luxuries (yes, including Costco!), and seamless highway connectivity to Tacoma, Seattle, and SeaTac Airport. We are a perfectly balanced "purple" community where everyone finds their niche.
